The One Page Business Plan
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."
-- Albert Einstein
Management Challenges
Business plans are too complex to create, they are hard to communicate, managers are not held accountable for results, and it is hard to track progress against plan. As the volatility of the economy continues to grow, so too does the need to focus on the disciplined execution of a tight, well-developed and widely understood business plan. Successful business plans blend rigorous thinking with transparency in tracking progress against explicit, time-based objectives.
Benefits of One Page Business Plans
One of the greatest challenges of management is actually executing a business plan. Too often:
- Plans are too complicated - so no one understands them thus they end up in a drawer
- A "planning team" creates the plan - excluding those accountable for accomplishment
- Plans are disconnected from tracking - so they never get "accomplished"
- Strategies are not tied to objectives - wasting resources on unproductive activities
- The planning process is too complicated - so performance targets are allowed to slip
- Plans and progress are not transparent and current - lowering motivation without a clear view of progress against goals
- Funders deny support for complex plans - they distrust those lacking clarity, transparency, agility and accountability
Whether for a company, business unit, program or project, the One Page Planning Process addresses each of these issues and provides transparency, accountability, managerial development, and business results at a far lower cost than traditional - and usually ineffective - strategic planning processes. With the right guidance, you can create robust plans that actually deliver results. What One Page Business Plans Are Not
This is not a $195 "plan-in-a-can," or a 30-page template plan, or a "plan your business in a day" service. Nor, is it meant to provide the detailed projections often required to finance or sell a business. A One Page Plan is a rigorous exercise for an emerging or ongoing business to boil down to its core vision, mission, objectives, strategies and action plans for the coming year. Given the current market volatility and uncertainty, focus must be on disciplined execution of a solid one-year plan. A one page plan is not meant to replace a long term strategy - just make sure that the strategy gets executed with discipline.
How One Page Business Plans Work
The planning system consists of three options:
- The One Page Business Plan - develop a single one page business plan through streamlined planning. A basic plan can be scoped out in a few hours and completed in several sessions over a few weeks, including alignment meetings with direct reports.
- Team Business Plans - planning for a larger organization, based on the executive's one page business plan, direct reports would develop their own one page plans (e.g., for finance, human resources, production, marketing, research).
- The One Page Planning and Performance System - provides online tracking and visibility of performance of one or more plans over the year. Scorecards for each objective and progress reports for each action plan creates transparency and accountability to the entire organization through disciplined execution of plans. Makes performance against plan visible 24/7 in a common format across the organization and creates a culture of performance.

OPBP Plan Status
In a more complex organization, every manager has a plan and all plans are shown on a single organization chart. Everyone knows the status of every plan at all times - green for approved, yellow for draft and red for missing plans. Access to the current version of any plan is a click away.
Access all your organization's one page plans, performance scorecards and progress reports in one place, any time through this simple interface.

OPBP Scorecard
Within a plan, click on any objective to open a performance scorecard for that objective. Since each objective is described in clear, graphable terms (e.g., increase/decrease metric A from X to Y by date Z), progress can be tracked monthly against plan, budget or last year's actuals. Managers can add comments as needed to each objective to describe reasons for notable variance with planned progress. Other managers or supervisors can quickly understand the status and direction of every plan for which they are accountable.
Simplified and common format progress reporting saves managers precious report preparation time and keeps a quickly understandable summary of progress against plan.

OPBP Progress Report
Each business plan has a number of Action Plans to indicate major projects that address the work to be done. Just like for Objectives, each Action Plan has a Progress Report to indicate how a manager is moving toward completion. Managers report % complete and note significant results, variance or challenges.
The system creates transparency and accountability by indicating which Performance Scorecards and Progress Reports have not been updated each month. Managers save time preparing reports and supervisor reviews are more effective because every manager's report is in one place and one format.
That's it! Planning and execution discipline comes from the expertise of the ROM consultant advising the client.
